Information Technology Project Management, Sixth Edition offers the "behind-the-scene" aspect of technology. Although project management has been an established field for many years, managing information technology requires ideas and information that go beyond standard project management. By weaving together theory and practice, this text presents an understandable, integrated view of the many concepts skills, tools, and techniques involved in project management. Because the project management field and the technology industry change rapidly, you cannot assume that what worked even five years ago is still the best approach today. This text provides up-to-date information on how good project management and effective use of software can help you manage projects, especially information technology projects. Information Technology Project Management, Sixth Edition, is still the only textbook to apply all nine project management knowledge areas—project integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk, and procurement management—and all five process groups—initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing—to information technology projects. | Average Customer Rating: Burdensome Read This text was used for a 100 level community college class, I suspect because it is very comprehensive. The glossary at the end of each chapter is outstanding. The index is good but could be improved. Trouble is, the author forgot or ignores the fundamentals of Writing 210.
The writing style is overly and unnecessarily dense, far too often in the passive voice. The topic is loaded with jargon and the author does nothing to mitigate the jargon but seems rather to embrace it much like she does the passive voice, repeating the same jargon from sentence to subsequent sentence. My hunch is that no editor has ever touched the text itself because such a large percentage of the syntax would need adjustment -- substantially a rewrite.
The author knows her stuff; I would hire her as a project manager in an instant but I hope instructors look elsewhere for their text in order to spare their students from such a burdensome read. The what, how, why, when, who, and where with all. This book is all that I needed to become a project manager, perform the role as a professional, complete the tasks, produce quality deliverables, and pass the PMP Exam! very good the book came in the expected time, the book was in a very good shape and the CD and website were inside. I needed the book for one of my courses and it's a good book for people in the management field or any one intrested in this area. it has 12 chapters, going throw all the stages of the devoloping a business. if are a busiess managere its a good book to have. Good book on this subject It is really well written, but only for those who really want to make IT project management this much complicated. I guess project managers dealing with really big IT projects would need this knowledge. For others, it is good to know how an IT project is successfully managed, though for most of the projects which most of the IT professionals deal with on daily basis don't need that much complications.
This book quotes a lot of very good real life examples where IT projects fail because of bad management or succeed because of good management.
Key point which I learned from this book was that NO IT project completes in time, and all of them take twice the estimated time, so after making a plan for an IT project, give yourself twice the time to complete your project than what you have estimated, otherwise it is destined to fail because it'll not complete on time and in the last minute you'll rush to complete it as soon as possible, and that is where you'll make mistakes. Insightful, thorough and easy to read and understand! This was one of the best books I've ever read on project management. I especially like the short quizzes at the end of each chapter to reinforce the material and I love the additional resources, such as the templates, provided on the companion website. I will definitely recommend it to others! | |
