Using Computers in the Law Office | Customer Rating: | | this book is more like a reference book. It covers the computer programs very well. | Judging the Book On Its Own Merits, An Excellent Textbook | Customer Rating: | Dear Friends:
I think we need to judge books on their own merits -- and this book is superlative.
Now, I read the only other review of this edition of "Using Computers in the Law Office." Like that reviewer, I was profoundly saddened to discover that the author of the book is married to a right-wing activist whose views and actions I strongly and deeply disagree with, to put it very mildly!
However -- I am of the opinion that a non-political, and non-religious book should be judged on its own merits and the abilities of the author, rather than on the political and religious views of the author's wife and father-in-law.
The book is not about politics or religion -- it is rather, an excellent introduction to computers and their use in the law office. I have not had an opportunity to read the entire text, but just the parts I have sampled so far, as a long-time law firm employee, are excellent.
For any law firm employee or student in a legal field -- from attorneys to paralegals to other law firm employees, and students planning to work for law firms in any capacity -- this book is a great introduction (or review for the more knowledgeable) of many topics in computer use in the law firm.
It covers everything from basic Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.) all the way to frequently used legal programs (AbacusLaw, Casemap, Timemap, Summation, iBlaze, Tabs3 and SmartDraw) to sections on e-discovery, computer-assisted research in Westlaw and Nexis and concludes with a discussion of the "electronic courthouse."
The book contains two CDs containing samples of all these programs, so the reader can carry out various self-teaching exercises to learn the programs.
The book is written in such a way that people who are complete novices with computers can use it, and highly experienced computer users can skip over those sections, and go to sections where they will learn new things.
I bought the book, despite misgivings generated by the previous reviewer, because I am changing "slots" within the legal field, and my new position will likely require knowledge of software like Summation that I do not yet have. I was not able to find any comparable text -- I would likely have had to buy three or four other books to get the information crammed into this one.
Mr. Roper's text will "upgrade" my knowledge in virtually every area where I need it for my career change.
Again, it was a difficult decision for me to buy the book and write this review, since I disagree with Mr. Roper's wife and father-in-law on almost every conceivable religious and political ground imaginable -- they are on Mars, I am on Venus.
But this book is not written by Mr. Roper's wife or father-in-law, and it is not about religion or politics -- it is an excellent legal textbook and an excellent teaching tool, and I speak from over 30 years law firm experience.
| Forced to Buy | Customer Rating: | I had to buy this book for a required class at my educational institution. Reading the preface, I was morally outraged to find that the author is married to Shirley Phelps-Roper. The Phelps-Ropers head the Westboro Church in Kansas and intentionally create mental anguish and grief to families of fallen American soldiers by standing outside of the deceased's funerals with signs stating "God is dead" and other hateful, hurtful slogans. Needless to say, this has colored my opinion of the text and I have no respect for the author. I decided many years ago to never burn a book, but as this text is just an operating software manual, I may revise that decision.
I am very happy that as of this date, my educational institution is examining other texts for the class for the next quarter. ^_^ |
