GUESS I AM EASIER TO PLEASE FOR A MURDER MYSTERY

ENTERTAINMENT and that is what it did. I would give it a 4 plus for the plot and mystery but certainly a big fat minus for the fricking language causing more black outs.

I was definitely intrigued about why Abigail Browning's husbands' murder was still unsolved after seven years.
Owen Garrison was 11 when his sister Dorothy or "Doe" as they called her drown'd - that was 25 years ago - He knew of and were friends with Chris, Mattie Young, Ellis's present day gardner and Doyle Alden, now the local chief of Police on the Island.

It seems that everyone is living with some secret or emotional disturbance.
Owen wants to start a training center on the Island and has asked Doyle's wife Katie to head it. That has left Doyle unhappy that his wife was in England and in care of his two sons alone. Sean, 11 and Ian, 9 stir up a little trouble just being boys. They even scared themselves.

A weird phone call sends Abby to the Maine State Police and Lt. Lou Beeler
There seems to be a connected history between the Garrisons, the Brownings, and the Coopers from way back. Oh yes, Abbie's father is John March,59 and director of the FBI and he doesn't tell her anything about Chris or his job.
On Abbie's side is her Boston PD detective pals and condo partners, Bob O'Reilly and Scoop Wisdom who are more than willing to help her.

The Coopers are wealthy and have their own secrets - Jason, 62 and father of Grace, 38 and son, Linc, 20 who hates being considered an afterthought.
He was 13 at the time of Chris's murder and people wonder - is he or Mattie, 42 and a drinker, the murderer? Jason's half-brother, Ellis is an avid gardner and employs Mattie.

For entertainment the plot was great - the characters were excellent - the mystery and intrigue were there, just like a good dance. The freaking language shows a want of better expression [hey, HELL is still a four letter word and works just as well] Don't drag us [females] down the the male's inability to properly express himself.

Over all a good read for mystery - intrigue - a plot to enjoy - just couldn't hit the 5 star rating.

Really Bad...

This book was my first and last experience with Carla Neggers; I bought it at the drugstore to read on a rainy afternoon and was sorely disappointed. The "whodunit" was so poorly plotted that I guessed the murderer's identity as soon as all of the suspects had been introduced. Even more disappointing, the protagonists were one-dimensional figures. Their "romance" was emotionless, and by-the-numbers. I thought this book was so bad that I am tempted to write to Neggers and demand my money back.

Good - but she's done better.

Not too sure what to tell you... Right in the first chapter you meet Abigail and find out what happened in the past and how she feels 7 years later. I found her to be a strong woman who has in a sense let go of the past - but not all of it. Yes, she's accepted that Chris is gone, but she still harbors the feeling that had they done things differently, Chris would still be alive. Truthfully, she hasn't really let go. She wants to find who killed him, and she's tenacious, but any homicide cop would be.

The synopsis puts Owen as a huge character in Abigail's life. While he seems larger than life, and I felt somewhat of a connection between the two, it missed that 'sizzle' I'm used to reading with the author's work. I didn't find Owen as big a help to Abigail as he's portrayed to be.

Several characters that you get to know, and even though you know the obvious choice in bad guys is usually wrong, I became suspicious of a certain character and had every reason to be.

One major plot, a few smaller ones, and none of them were completely surprising, which, again, I missed from the author's usual work.

What truly bugged me, though, was Abigail's attitude. Yes, she is now a homicide cop, and cops 'don't do emotions', but I found that Abigail lacked. I mean several times she's goaded, and all she did was grin and bear it. I get the sense that she does that because those goading her are/were her husband's best friends, but she never yelled, never showed her frustration. I'm used to reading a frustrated and upset cop going to either the shooting range or the gym to take out her frustration. She attacks a wall with a sledgehammer. Although there's a reason for that, I still didn't feel enough emotion from the main character, and it left me feeling disconnected from the story.

The ending was rushed, and I didn't like that you don't get complete answers, just speculation. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't her greatest work.

Suspense with a gothic feel

This is my first book by Carla Neggers, and I was impressed. The use of flashbacks was a little overdone, but I was intrigued by the characters. She grabbed me in the first chapter when Abigail burned her journals to the last page. Several times I thought I knew who murdered her husband, but I was wrong. Carla is a major talent in romantic suspense, and I can't wait to read more.
