The book is a typical first class Golden West publication including facts, figures and photos in the proper proportion. Very adequately covers the subject.

I was surprised to see that I was quoted in the book. On the last page the author told of how I said my goodbye to the SP while on the last Coast train from L.A. to San Luis Obispo. The book is a good history of the SP, with a lot of detail. A good one for your bookshelf!

While this book is not a comprehensive history of the Southern Pacific empire, it does take a focused and concise look at the history of Southern Pacific's workforce and operations in the Los Angeles Area. Chapters are arranged by specific locations, such as SP Central Station, The Bullring, The Shops/LATC, LAUPT, Taylor Yard, and others. If you railfan and SP fan in Los Angeles and wonder about the history of sites you come across, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.
