Since its publication more than ten years ago, The Person has been accepted as the definitive text of personality development. Developmental stages, with emphasis on adult stages | Customer Rating: | Lidz took Erik Erikson's eight stages of man idea (in Childhood and Society) and expanded it with many stages in adulthood. The adult stages will cover a fairly diverse group of readers. Erikson's stage of Intimacy vs Isolation is expanded into half a book. For example, under Marital Adjustment he discusses personality changes with marriage. He does this not in a pop-culture way, but using psychological concepts that will be familiar to psychologically-minded readers.
People struggling with a life adjustment may find they are in the normal range, and may find some ideas for easing the way.
Therapists will welcome the amount of research cited by the author, and his grounding is psychiatry and psychotherapy. While this book has not been revised since 1983, used copies are readily available on Amazon.
Students struggling with Erikson will find they are right: life was never quite so compact as Erikson wished. There was a time in the 60's when we hoped life could be simplified! But it can't. And Lidz did a fine job of expanding of Erikson's pioneering work.
