Summary:

Miranda loves Jay so much that she forgives her almost anything and even agrees to be described to the family as Jay's roommate. But when she tries to push Jay to be more truthful, she is rewarded with an angry beating that shocks her to the core. The two attempt to repair their relationship but eventually Miranda comes to see that hoping for genuine love from Jay is about as sensible as sunbathing in Siberia. With humor and sensitivity, this compelling first novel shows the harm that life in the closet does to lesbian couples-and the damage we can all do to ourselves by staying in the wrong relationship.

Elizabeth Lewis lives in Glasgow, Scotland, where she is studying English Literature.

This book really opened my eyes and helped me realize that my family loves me dearly. I was with someone who would not come out to their family, and after reading this book I know that it isn't ok to stay with someone who won't acknowledge your relationship to their family. I think that the mainstream belief is that abusers are usually men, and it was an eye opener to read about a woman abusing another woman so violently.

Jay cannot cope with the fact that her parents will most likely disown her if they find out she is gay. They are openly against such a lifestyle. She has been living with Miranda for six years, but her family still thinks of them as flatmates. Whats worse is that Jay makes Miranda take down all of the "gay" decorations whenever her family comes to visit. Once they figure out that Miranda is gay, Jay sits there openly and lets them degrade her and push their opinions on her. It is amazing to see that through all of this as well as beatings from Jay, Miranda loves her enough to stay and try to work it out.

This book was excellent, but not for the faint as the description of one beating in particular is very graphic and will leave anyone with a heart in tears.
