Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com With a reputation for outstanding scientific quality, Organic Chemistry by G. Marc Loudon is a textbook that students will actually want to read. This much-anticipated fourth edition continues its predecessors' popular and unique mechanistic approach within a functional group framework. Enhanced biological and biochemical material makes it ideal for chemistry majors as well as pre-medical and pre-pharmacy students taking a full-year, sophomore- level course. Loudon's excellent use of language and reader-friendly style transform organic chemistry into a logical, understandable, and exciting subject for students.
In use at undergraduate and graduate schools of all levels, this authoritative yet accessible volume is packed with effective analogies that enliven and clarify rigorous discussions of important concepts. For example, Loudon uses a flute player jumping between musical octaves to explain transitions between quantum levels. An engaging detective with combined characteristics from Sherlock Holmes and James Bond depicts resonance structures. Thanks to humorous characters like Flick Flaskflinger and Professor Havno Scentz, problem-solving becomes simultaneously challenging and entertaining. Varying from the routine to the complex, Loudon's problems are renowned for their originality, their range of difficulty levels, and their ability to teach students to understand and predict organic reactivity rather than just memorize facts. In addition, Loudon blends biological, environmental, and industrial applications of organic chemistry into the body of the text-rather than separating them as "special topics"-giving students an integrated sense of the subject in its real-life context.
Other Features 7 Uses a high-resolution 300 MHz spectra run specifically for this text in an easy-to-read format that makes splitting patterns very clear. 7 Includes new sections on transition-metal organometallic chemistry, reactions of pyridoxal phosphate, combinatorial synthesis, and drug design. 7 Emphasizes both Bronsted and Lewis acid-base chemistry and their associated curved-arrow notations. 7 Provides more than 1,500 excellent in-text problems that challenge students to think and analyze rather than just memorize. 7 Presents "boxed asides" with interesting historical vignettes and analogies that enrich the text. 7 Utilizes extensive cross-references between important concepts, thus saving students trips to the index. 7 Supplemented by a CD-ROM--"Dynamic Organic Chemistry"--containing original animations (Mac and Windows compatible). 7 Accompanied by a comprehensive Study Guide and Solutions Manual, acclaimed as one of the best in the field. This combination guide/manual supplies not only answers but also detailed solutions to all text problems. Its "Study Guide Links" show students how to solve problems, provide shortcuts to mastering particular topics, and offer detailed discussions of concepts that students often find difficult. Full chapter outlines, a glossary of terms, and reaction reviews are provided. Terrible | Customer Rating: | | This book is one of the worst text books I have ever read. The diagrams are few and far between and the jargon is just overwhelming. There are only a few things which are explained crystal clear. The diagrams are terrible, there is no color in the entire book so it gets hard to read after a while, and the chapters are insanely long. Being a chem major, there are way better books than this one. | Filthy Purchase | Customer Rating: | It's a great text. However, the person who sold me my copy should be barred from Amazon. That person has no concept on what is considered to be "like new": The book that I bought based on a claim that the book was like new was a major disappointment! It seemed to have fallen into mud, which was later wiped dry; and the pages have markings (notations and worked problems) throughout.
I wouldn't recommend this seller's items: be warned! | Don't order this package -- it is not what it says it is... | Customer Rating: | No idea if the book is good or not yet, but when I ordered this package it came WITHOUT the study guide. Amazon "corrected" the error by sending me another copy of the text, ALSO WITHOUT the study guide.
After an hour of discussion, they agreed, "as a one time only thing" to break their policy of not correcting purchaser errors. Because the description is in the "Editorial Reviews" it is not their responsibility to be sure it's accurate. For the price listed you get the TEXT ONLY, no study guide....for that, there is an additional charge of $78. | So far so good | Customer Rating: | | I bought this to update my library. So far, whenever I've turned to it I found what I wanted. It's hard to find a good comprehensive organic chem book without buying an intro and advanced book separately. So far, this has covered the bases. Who knows, maybe I'm not doing advanced enough work!! | Great text | Customer Rating: | | I have found this text to be well written and very helpful. Organic Chemistry is quite difficult in general, but this book takes you through everything in a clear and concise manner. Lots of problems to practice. It may also help to get the solutions guide which answers the problems setp-by-step and gives another perspective/sumary of the material. |
