Summary:
Finally, a medical terminology text that truly immerses readers within the language of medicine, so that students can apply their vocabulary within a real-world context. As opposed to fostering rote memorization, this book engages students in an interactive learning experience that will give them a vital tool and inspire them to become true consumers of medical language. The goal is to connect with readers, to engage their visual auditory and kinesthetic senses, to stimulate them, and fuel their complete understanding of the topic. As students engage in this multi-sensory experience within these pages, they should remember that we are not encouraging them to merely discover, learn, know, or even understand, the information. Instead we want readers to live it! We want them to dig in, dive in, and become immersed!

EXCELLENT book! It is very informative as well as well-written in a format that the average person will grasp. There is a lot to it, but it gives plenty of exercises to help you through this process. I think for the time you must invest in grasping the concept that this book is well worth the effort to work with.

I'm in the middle of my medical transcriptionist training and the school I'm working with introduced this book as a replacement for an earlier medical terminology text. It's good, but I don't think it's better. It's packed with information, photos, illustrations, etc, along with the expected terminology exercises and an interactive CD, but in my opinion it has one major flaw that causes a couple of very annoying problems. It's printed on very slick and shiny paper. That makes writing in the book extremely difficult (yes, writing, because you do reviews, quizzes, etc, and make notes) unless you use ink...which makes corrections impossible. The second problem is the amount of light reflected by the shiny paper. That makes reading a really tiring chore. My #1 favorite in this genre is Chabner's "The Language of Medicine" 7th edition. Same type of material, photos, illustrations, etc. with a more straight-forward focus on terminology minus the slick paper and presentation, and it also has an interactive CD.

After extensive research, this is BY FAR the best medical training book for beginning or intermediate users

Background:

In an attempt to restart a career in medicine or nursing, I have purchased about $500 in medical books in the last couple months. In that time, I have spent literarly probably 50 hours doing 2 things 1) combing the shelves of bookstores (4 different big chain stores and a medical books store) and 2) Going through countless products and reviews online. I now own many of the classic medical books in a number of different medical areas.

Conclusion:

This book, while apparently not well known, is however one of the best in existence, right up there with "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine"; except for people who are not yet in medical/nursing school.

I know that seems like incredible praise, but if you don't believe me, see if you can find it at a local store, and check it out for yourself.

This book covers it all: systems, structures, functions, diseases, signs/symptoms, tests, treatments, procedures, mnemonic devices (memory aids), medications, careers, legal/legislative/policy issues, etc.

All which is to just to say, it is *Extremely Thorough*.

However, it is far from boring or drab. It presents information as clearly and memorably as can be done. Graphically, this book is *a pleasure* to read; and organizes info better than any book I have seen. Use of etymology (word history) and pronounciation guides are extremely well done.

Additionally, the CD rom is *AMAZING*. Well designed, easy to use, with tons of games, a great user interface, and limitless possibilities to construct your own study sets. Additionally, it has loads of well designed animated clips to explain all sorts of things.

Whether you have no medical education whatsoever, or have alreaady finished a pre-med or pre-health program and want to enroll in a graduate medial program;.you should get this book and plan to spend a great deal of time with it.
