Summary:
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's remarkable series of paintings known as the Berlin Street Scenes is a highpoint of the artist's work and a milestone of German Expressionism. Kirchner moved from Dresden to Berlin in 1911, and it was there, immersed in the vitality of a teeming city and under the looming shadow of imminent world war, that he created the Street Scenes in a burst of creative energy and ambition. Berlin was at this time undergoing rapid growth, and as Kirchner absorbed the crowds and energy of city life, his work responded with acute perspective, jagged brushstrokes and searing color. As the most extensive consideration of these paintings in English, this richly illustrated volume examines the creative process undertaken by the artist as he explored his themes through various media and presents a major body of related work including drawings, pen-and-ink studies, pastels, etchings, woodcuts and lithographs. It also investigates the significance of the streetwalker as the dominant motif of this series, and provides insight on its relationship to Kirchner's wider oeuvre.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was one of German Expressionism's foremost practitioners. His painterly aesthetic was formed within the Bruche group, in Dresden, where he was one among a number of artists rebelling against bourgeois life and the stale conventions of the academy. Kirchner made his Street Scenes series immediately following the dissolution of Bruche. Today he is increasingly recognized as one of the major figures in the early development of Modern art.

A welcome addition to the growing body of work concerning the German Expressionist movement
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a part of the acclaimed German Expressionism whose artistic representations of such urban elements as buildings, sidewalks, shops, and vehicles showcased both the glamour and the tumult of life in the city. Now his work accomplished between 1913 and 1915 has been compiled by Deborah Wye and includes 135 color illustrations of his work. The informed and informative text traces the artist's creative process, examines his sketchbook illustrations, and is supplemented by a chronology of his life and includes a selected bibliography. With its particular focus on Berlin street scenes, "Kirchner And The Berlin Street" is a welcome addition to the growing body of work concerning the German Expressionist movement in general, and the life and work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in particular. No academic library Art History collection can be considered complete or comprehensive without the inclusion of "Kirchner And The Berlin Street".

When the street becomes art

The catalogue for a small exhibition at Moma in NYC centered on a famous body of works painted by Kirchner in 1913-1914 depicting street scenes in Berlin, this book is divided into two chapters: chapter one explains the meaning of these scenes (the importance of urban life, the presence of the female figure as the main character - are these women passers-by, shoppers, prostitutes?)and their explicit eroticism, and chapter two dwells on Kirchner's working process through the numerous studies he made for these particular scenes.

Above all, this book is worth it for the high-quality illustrations that grace it. It starts with a genuine firework of masterpieces, showing the seven (out of eleven the artist painted) street scene oil paintings which form the core of the exhibition (noteworthy is a beautiful fold-out with 3 paintings side by side)with absolutely no text next to them, leaving it to the reader (or rather, to the spectator) to appreciate them in their full bloom of garish colors and brisk lines.
