The Laws of Research
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4
The folks at Gilbert consistently produce the most no-nonsense supplements to difficult casebooks. The first half of this one nails down all you'll need to know about digging useful information out of dense codes and cases, following a very useful primer on the basics of the judicial system. There is also beneficial coverage of the various online research tools, but note that the book was published in 2002 and seems a bit tentative on the true usefulness of the online databases, which have proven themselves since. Next we get into rather inconsistent pointers on analysis of data, starting with the great IRAC method. But this is followed by a dubious method called the Honigsberg Grid, which is so simplistic and under-explained that it barely deserves to be named after someone (not even the author of a research and analysis guide). The book then moves into writing skills, and here is where it really leaves a few things to be desired. The pointers on writing basic legal documents for courtroom and law firm use are to the point but a bit limited in scope, while I would recommend an additional section on how to approach the writing of a law journal article. Given the three endeavors inherent in the book's title, its pointers on research are mostly excellent, but the coverage of writing and analysis is inconsistent and a bit arbitrary.
