I particularly liked the way it compared the MPC way of viewing crime with the common law way of viewing crime. Our professor liked to stress this in class so it was very helpful on my exam. | Helpful, but the other Dressler Hornbook is better and more concise | Customer Rating: | | This book has been helpful to me as a One-L preparing for my Crim Law exam, but I found the small hornbook written by Joshua Dressler, "Understanding Criminal Law" ISBN:0-8205-7001-X to be more concise and direct. They both have hypotheticals explaining concepts, but I would buy the small one first. If you're still having trouble with a concept, then get this one. It may explain the concept in a slightly different way that will make it "click" for you. | A Nice Supplement | Customer Rating: | | I have Professor Dressler for Criminal Law right now and I find this book to be an excellent supplement to his other texts. Understanding Criminal Law and the CasebookUnderstanding Criminal Law There is the link for his treatise (Understanding Criminal Law). Anyways, the book is an extremely quick read and serves as a nice way to sum up sections without outlining yourself. | Dressler's clever scheme | Customer Rating: | The book is fairly useful because it presents readers with a great amount of black letter law. It made me wonder why Dressler's textbook is such an awful and confusing mess of babble. Then, it finally hit me. Dressler simultaenously churns out impossible-to-understand criminal law textbooks that law students are forced to buy, thereby creating a market for black letter law guides and hornbooks. Then, Dressler creates these black letter law guides and hornbooks as an antidote to his shoddy textbook! Ingenius.
Honestly, there are better books out there to help you with criminal law. I find the nutshell series to be more helpful than Dressler. The Emanuel and Gilbert outlines are also better. After producing his horrible "Cases and Materials on Criminal Law" textbook for 1Ls, which seems to be intentionally confusing, Dressler doesn't deserve to sell any of his study-aids. | Dressler's Sum and Substance review | Customer Rating: | I found the package of cds convenient and easy to use in the car. I use Dressler's book Understanding Criminal Law for my forensic psychology graduate students. I find Dressler's easy to understand style yet comprehensive and scholarly review of criminal law, legal concepts and legal analysis to be perfect for these students. I have decided to add the Sum and Substance cds to the library reserve for them to review as needed and also to experience first hand an excellent law school professor.
