Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Dale Ahlquist, the President of the American Chesterton Society, and author of G. K Chesterton -The Apostle of Common Sense, presents a book of wonderful insights on how to "look at the whole world through the eyes of Chesterton". Since, as he says, "Chesterton wrote about everything", there is an ocean of his material to benefit from GKC's insights on a kaleidoscope of many important topics. Chesterton wrote a hundred books on a variety of themes, thousands of essays for London newspapers, penned epic poetry, delighted in detective fiction, drew illustrations, and made everyone laugh by his keen humor. Everyone who knew Chesterton loved him, even those he debated with. His unique writing style that combines philosophy, spirituality, history, humor, and paradox have made him one of the most widely read authors of modern times. As Ahlquist shows in his engaging volume, this most quoted writer of the 20th century has much to share with us on topics covering politics, art, education, wonder, marriage, fads, poetry, faith, charity and much more. In Love with GKC | Customer Rating: | | Common Sense 101 brings Chesterton to life better than some biographies I have read. Ahlquist has fallen in love with Chesterton, and he is inviting the reader to do so also. Even those intimately familiar with Chesterton's writing should be impressed by this book. If it doesn't whet the appetite for Chesterton among those otherwise unfamiliar with his writings, nothing is likely to. | oldies but goodies | Customer Rating: | | Good advice from the 'Rat Pack' of the mid-20th century - one of the Inklings and his sidekick. | Great Overview of Chesterton | Customer Rating: | | For the beginner, this was a great introduction to G.K. Chesterton. It gives some of his personal life and background, as well as pieces of his best writing. But Chesterton is much much bigger than one book (he would appreciate the humor in that statement). The author even gives his book a flavor of Chesterton's writing (at least to the amateur reader). But what can you expect from someone who is heading the Chesterton Society. This is a great book and made me want to read more of the original Chesterton. It also makes a great book of common sense philosophy that is a hallmark of G.K. Chesterton. | A must read. Common Sense is no longer very common. | Customer Rating: | | This book is absolutely remarkable. Although G. K. Chesterton wrote his material almost 100 years ago, his writings are so poignant to anyone living in today's world. Dale Ahlquist informs us of a multitude of very important subjects addressed by Chesterton throughout his life. I can't say enough about it; you just have to read this book! | Common sense 101 for non atheists | Customer Rating: | | In the opening chapters Dale Ahlquist gives a vivid and rich description of the captivating character that is G K Chesterton. Ahlquist, an admitted Chesterton fan, provides a guide to the world 'through Chesterton's eyes' with the focus on the question - what is really important in life? There are some hard questions asked and some blunt answers given. Not a book for those who feel wish to remain comfortable with atheist, Darwinian, Marxist, Freudian or even scientific beliefs. If you are happy to challenge your beliefs and are willing to ask questions of yourself and others, Ahlquist and Chesterton offer a wide range of ideas to debate. Easy to read, entertaining and challenging. |
