This book is clearly intended for someone who has never seen a sound system let alone work with one. There is absolutely no useful information in this book for anyone who has the slightest clue about sound systems. It is just totally lacking in any thing technical. It is also the thinnest book, (that is if you can even call it a book: a leaflet may be more appropriate) I have ever bought because it has nothing to offer. in short a total waste of money unless you are an idiot when it comes to sound.

Few errors, not much substance either

I am an acoustical and systems design consultant who specializes in the design and functional rehabilitation of worship facilities. I recently purchased this book as part of a survey of available literature to recommend to the church staff members and volunteers I routinely train in technical operations.

At 45 pages, this is more of a pamphlet than a book. While most of the information is suitable for the audio beginner, some space is wasted on a superficial discussion of loudspeaker placement options. Indeed, it is very unfortunate that the book's back cover and preface claim to teach the reader to "design the right system for your needs." That is certainly not something that can be accomplished on such a simplistic level, and it does not occur within the covers of this book! Had it stuck to an achievable mission of meeting the legitimate needs of the novice user, this book could have had a chance of success.

This book is at its best as a familiarization manual for the components and user controls of a very small, very simple sound system. It dis-serves the reader where it reinforces the misconceptions that small-format, MI-grade speakers are useful for sound reinforcement in what are often highly reverberant spaces, that separate analog crossovers or graphic equalizers are used in modern sound systems, of that there is more than one standard for the wiring of a 3-pin XLR cable. The instructions for using a graphic EQ to ring out a microphone-speaker system branch are quite useful, but should be placed in the context that 1) loudspeaker design and mic polar pattern selection and placement are the primary means of feedback control, and 2) proper optimization of a loudspeaker system, especially a multi-way system, requires high-resolution analytical equipment and the expertise to interpret the information it displays. In other words, the reader of this book may be encouraged to go do some real damage to an existing system that has been set up in at least a partially correct manner. In general, books like this one, that don't make clear what are and are not user adjustments and equipment selection decisions, tend to create even more sound operators who "know enough to be dangerous."

good for small churches

I found this book a good basic intro. It should work well for those without an electronics background. For formulas and numbers, and more technical information see the Guide to Sound Systems for Worship by Jon F. Eiche.

Read this book before you buy your sound equipment.
This book presented a simple and general overview of a sound system. It is perfect for people with limited or no previous knowledge of sound systems. It gives those who do know something about sound systems - the tools to share a basic knowledge with others.

Read this book to train your sound people. It is not enough to know what knob to turn on your mixer - this book will help you to understand what happens when you turn that knob. It's not enough to know you need a mic - this book will help you make the right choice for your application.

To all those non-professional coordinators thrust into setting up settings for sound in a variety of church venues - this book should be a MUST on your reference shelf.

Worth ten times the price!
