As a dancer who has worked with many choreographers, I was always aware that many approaches could generate exciting dances. As a choreographer, I was always drawn to the astonishing variety of creative processes and to the visions that generated them, eventually to realize they constituted a rich ecology in a creative landscape. And just as the ecology of nature needs variety to be healthy, the same is true of the ecology of dance. In A MAP OF MAKING DANCES I have tried to set down every vision and creative process encountered over fifty years, knowing that as soon as it is published, new visions and processes will burst upon the dance landscape. That is as it should be. This book succeeds if it can convey even a fraction of the excitement and exhilaration open to anyone who tries to make a dance. Some four decades ago, when I discovered that dances made by my students were as interesting to me as my own and often more so, it was to realize that my true calling was as a teacher. I continue to enjoy dancing and making dances, yet as a teacher look forward with excitement to hearing from those who venture into the creative landscape, to which I hope A MAP OF MAKING DANCES is a useful guide.

Not just for the students of choreography but a fun and exhaustive survey of ideas. A real find for writers, visual artists, composers, even though it was written for dance makers. For would-be and veteran dance makers of course, this book is a must. Stuart Hodes has been making dances teaching and performing for four decades with the best and the brightest, Martha Graham, Television, Broadway...He has done it all and has an encyclopedic memory and eye and ear for interesting detail. BLOCKED? Pick up this book! This book is worth every penny and will serve as a resource for years. |
