Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com

Summary:

Kevin Leman wants you to know that men are less complicated than you give them credit for. At the core of men, you'll find a sensitive, emotional being that needs to feel loved, respected and needed. Men are very protective of their core. It's this protective behavior that keeps men from openly sharing their feelings with women. But, Kevin Leman knows that the more you understand and are sensitive to the fears, anxieties, and insecurities that make the men in your life behave the way they do, the stronger your relationships will be.

Insightful: mainly about men but a little about women.

Some reviewers seem to think that the author presents a view that a woman must be totally about pleasing her husband. I actually thought he presented a balanced view, that marriage is a partnership where each spouse should be serving and loving the other.
It's important to note that the book is mainly about getting to know men (hence, the title). There are other books that focus on how to understand women. He presents more material about how a woman can please her husband than the other way around because that's what the book is about.
I also find that negative reviewers focus way too much on 1 statement and get upset about it. In any book about relationships an author will make generalizations. Most men are this way, most women are this way, etc. The intent of the book is not to say that all men are the same. However, all exceptions to the "norm" can't be addressed.
With this book (and every book), take the nuggets that you can relate to, think through how they apply to your life and ignore the things that don't seem to apply to you.

Some of this I may have already known, but I found it straight foward and well worth reading.

Excellent read! Written in a humorous vein, very entertaining. I learned a great deal about this species of men and it's been quite helpful in dealing with my own.

A few good tidbits, but not much more
Customer Rating:  Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2
First off, this is written by a Christian, for Christians. I didn't realize that when I started reading, but it quickly became apparent. Yes, there are a few good tidbits of information here, but overall, the book just irritated me. Some of the psychological insights presented in the first 3 chapters are good (conversation abilities, parental influences, don't make him into your girlfriend). After chapter 3 it just gets more and more "old fashioned" or male-centric.

As other reviewers have noted, it really does put all or most of the onus of the relationship on the woman. You are supposed to totally understand where he's coming from and give in to him at all times, no matter if he's acting like a baby or a jerk or a hothead. According to the author, there's always a good reason that he's acting the way he's acting - and mostly it's because the woman isn't catering to him the way men should be catered to. Some of the example situations discussed in the book really bothered me...really, these guys need to GROW UP! Take responsibility for being a man in a relationship - communicate like a grown-up, act like a grown-up, lose the temper tantrums, and lose a bit of your self centered-ness.

The author is definitely old school - "women are supposed to give up their lives for their man" is the background message here. Cater to his every whim and "need" no matter how childish, read his mind all of the time, and you will have him for life.

Yes, I agree women need to respect their mates, but that goes both ways Mr Leman!

7 Things He'll Never Tell You (but you need to know)

I recommend this book for any women who would like to understand how the male really thinks. This is good if you have a boyfriend, a son, a husband, or a son-in-law. You should really give it a try. You'll be glad you did.
