Summary:
From Art Deco–inspired geometric designs to traditional checkerboard stripes and elaborate motifs, this guide helps crafters rediscover crochet with more than 200 fabulous block patterns. Employing traditional styles and contemporary colors, crocheted blocks inspire crafters to create a dynamic palette of color, pattern, and texture by mixing, matching, and combining. Step-by-step instructions accompany each pattern, along with stunning photographs that encourage crocheters to explore a range of color combinations and coordinates. A directory of blocks is cross-referenced with symbols that describe the techniques used and the degree of difficulty, and each pattern is designed so that finished blocks are the same size when they are worked in yarn of the same weight. A useful refresher course of crochet stitches and techniques is included, as are patterns for edgings and instructions on making fringes to finish off afghans in style.

Valuable crochet reference
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4
I would recommend this book to crocheters of all skill levels. The skill levels are shown by the number of crochet hooks by the pattern. One hook is the easiest and three the hardest. They also list any difficult stitch at the start of the pattern so you know what to expect. I am a beginner and there were plenty of pretty patterns to start on and I can now do two hook patterns. I liked how they showed which combinations work together and made suggestions for different color themes. As another reviewer said, some of the colors they use are rather Blech! but you can always do your own thing.

Inspires creativity, and my results are really lovely

As many reviewers have already stated, there are not 200 different block designs. The author does indeed recycle patterns, displaying them in different colours and qualifying them as additional patterns. This is disappointing, but does not ruin the book.

And it must be stressed: several squares do have errors. Check the internet for corrections before beginning any projects. This is unfortunate, and a hassle, but again, shouldn't deter you from looking into this book if you love crochet and making afghan squares. Once I got this book I immediately went on the internet and copied the corrections, and placed the sheet of paper into the book for future reference. Annoying, but easy to do.

I consider myself to be a beginner/intermediate level crocheter, and I have crocheted several squares in these two experience levels from this book. I found the instructions pretty easy to follow and the squares I have made are really, really nice. ('Willow' and 'Framed Flower' are two of my favourites). I am certain that I will get a lot of use out of this book, and I enjoy flipping through it, thinking of future projects even as I use it to make this current afghan.

I found the colour choices really varied and inspiring. She uses many different combinations to suit anyone's taste, from muted to bright to monochromatic to contrasting. I also like how she suggests different squares to complement the square you've chosen to make.

The beginning portion of the book covers some colour theory and ideas for getting inspiration from things around you, as well as some full afghan designs she's put together from squares in this book.

I love crocheting blankets and I can already tell that this book is one I'm going to turn to again and again. Just looking through it is enough to make me want to get my hooks and yarn. I highly recommend this book for any level of crocheter. It's a shame about the pattern repetitions and especially the errors, but again, those things are not a deterrent. I have a stack of beautiful blocks and tons of ideas, and I have this book to thank for it.

200 Crochet Blocks critique
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4
Book is extremely well organized and easy to follow. Color photos and alternate color suggestions are helpful in selecting personal color choices.
The small print and four column format on each page is somewhat distracting and a different format might alleviate this situation.

modern color choices and fresh designs make this a winner

Granny squares are called granny squares for a reason: they reflect the sensibilities of days gone by. That style has its place and there is no shame in it. This book, however, is a refreshing departure from old-timey crochet. A throughly modern interpretation of crochet blocks will delight readers looking for a more contemporary approach to the craft. Yes there are several "granny" squares, but they have been creatively reinterpreted for 21st century tastes. The modern color combinations and playfulness with asymmetry distinguishes this book from the herd.

Crochet Club Hit

We are using this book to create squares for our crochet club. It is an excellent way to learn many new stitches. It calls for DK wool to get a 6 inch square. We are using "regular" yarn and it yields a 8 inch square. It is lots of fun!
