Good church-related discussion
Customer Rating:
I bought this book specifically because I saw that the first 7 chapters discuss non-technical church-related sound issues. I find this book very useful. I got a lot out of it, and have loaned it to others. The illustrations are very well done, adding a lot of information and making the book easy to understand. There is a lot of very practical information for a contemporary church. As a volunteer on the soundboard at a mid-sized church, I find a lot in this book that I can directly apply. For instance, I now understand that doubling the number of open mics puts the system 3dB closer to feedback. There are also some sections that do not directly apply to me, but are still interesting. For example, because we use electronic drums, the information on how to mic drums does not directly apply to me. I highly recommend this book for others in my position. I also highly recommend that non-technical church leadership read at least the first 7 chapters to understand what is required to effectively run a modern sound system, what are the issues, and be able to interface with the people like me who run it.
Beginning to End Church Sound Engineering
Customer Rating:
I am the Pastor of a Small Church and have found the training of people for sound engineering within the Church context demanding and difficult, with this book 'The Ultimate Church Sound Operator's Handbook' it is making it easier to train and develop new Sound Engineers. I have started to use this book as a text book for all my new Sound Engineers.
This book not only covers the advanced technical skills required, covering each topic in-depth but also speaks about the Christian Character that is required for an excellent Church Sound Engineer.
The Section on Generations Sound is excellent giving the sound engineer a clearer understanding of the issues relating sound including key frequencies that affect different age groups
I suspect that even for a person outside of the Church Context would find this book to be a valuable resource of technical information, particularly for anybody wishing to excel in sound engineering.
Sound engineering key principles that are found in the modern Church are found everywhere, from Small School Halls to Large Auditoriums seating thousands.
Again I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Pastor Keith Alchin NorthHaven Christian Outreach Centre. Warnervale NSW Australia
The Ultimate Church Sound Operator's Handbook
Customer Rating:
Not everyone who runs a CHURCH sound system is of the same spiritual persuasion. It would be a bit offensive to have to read the first three chapters of Christian Proselytizing if you are not Christian. This was to be a book about Sound Operations, not what your religious orientations are. Likewise, the arm-chair physchology could be limited to a sentence or two rather than lengthy paragraphs. These concepts are certainly a part of our lives in many situations, but please, this is to be about SOUND SYSTEMS! I was about to return the book, but as I examined it a bit further I did find some useful information. Much of the information was surface and it would have been nice had Mr. Gibson used the space proselytizing and psychologizing to give a few more details and REAL TIME examples of the concepts he was addressing. I am hoping to find a FEW more tid-bits of useful information in the book, but I am dissappointed that so many very critical aspects of sound management were treated in a superficial manner. It was certainly not worth the $40.00 paid for the book.
As complete as it gets!

I am the sound engineer at a small Baptist church. My background is R&R drummer and sound engineer at other larger churches. This book not only taught me more about sound, but helped me apply the knowledge to the entire church family. There's as much about attitude as there is about amplitude. This truly is the 'ultimate' church sound operator's handbook. It's relatively cheap, too.
Excellent overview with enough attention to detail

Wonderful book with a spiritual premise that quality sound is a God thing. Great book to give any of your new up and coming sound techs, especially those with limited knowledge. Also a great book to give to musicians on the worship team to assist them in understanding what is happening behind the board, and tips on how they can help the sound techs set up or tear down. I really appreciated the spiritual focus of the book.
