Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com

Summary:

The startling and ultimately uplifting narrative of one woman's thirteen-year experience as a foster parent.

For more than a decade, Kathy Harrison has sheltered a shifting cast of troubled youngsters-the offspring of prostitutes and addicts; the sons and daughters of abusers; and teenage parents who aren't equipped for parenthood. All this, in addition to raising her three biological sons and two adopted daughters. What would motivate someone to give herself over to constant, largely uncompensated chaos? For Harrison, the answer is easy.

Another Place at the Table is the story of life at our social services' front lines, centered on three children who, when they come together in Harrison's home, nearly destroy it. It is the frank first-person story of a woman whose compassionate best intentions for a child are sometimes all that stand between violence and redemption.

A Must Read!!!!!
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

I have personally known Kathy and her family for the past few years and this was my first opportunity to read this particular book she wrote. I have read a couple of hers in the past but this one rocked me to my core. I have never read a book before that had such an affect on me. I had so many emotions when I read the book and it just made me appreciate my upbringing, my family and an appreciation for all the foster families in this world and what they do each and every day. What an absolute wonderful to story! I would recommend this book to anyone who has a family, loves children and wants to read a book about just your average person with the biggest heart of anyone I know!

This would make a wonderful holiday gift for that special someone if your life.

Inspiring story

I loved this book because it shows us the good an ordinary person can do in the life of a child, even in the worst of circumstances. Kathy Harrison's book helped me in creating my book, Hannah's Reach, and still shapes a lot of my thinking on the subject of foster care. If there were more Harrison families, the world would be a better place. They are an inspiration for the rest of us to do what we can. I salute the good and faithful foster parents while I bemoan the system. The stories of the children placed in this home will stay with me for a long, long time as will Kathy's insights. It's a moving and fascinating read as well. If you're thinking of becoming a foster parent--it's essential reading! --Eileen Snow, author of Hannah's Reach

Great insights

This book provided great insights into the joys and struggles involved in foster care. I would recommend this book to anyone considering foster care and to all social workers involved in accompanying families on this journey.

Eye-opening

I am very interested in becoming a foster parent and this book put a lot of "Reality" to the idea. This book gives the rewarding side of it but it also opens your eyes to some of what you could be exposing your family (children) to. It breaks your heart to see what some 'people' (using the term loosely) are capable of. Gives the reader a lot to think about and it was presented in very good taste. I am very interested in reading more on the subject by this author.

Exactly what I wanted to read about Foster Care!
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

If you are especially curious about what it's really like to be a foster parent, this book is perfect. This book is sad, frustrating, heartwarming and so real. Kathy Harrison, author and experienced foster mom, manages to stay objective while confessing her true and human feelings. I could completely relate to her and felt like she could easily be a friend of mine. Just like Kathy's feelings for the foster care system, as a teacher, I can't find anyone to actually blame for our "disgraceful" public school system either. Kathy is a very empathetic and succinct writer. Her story was so interesting that I finished the book in a few days, which is really good for me.

We have been considering for quite some time the possibility of fostering or adopting a small number of children. Now, I have a better idea what it might be like. We still haven't ruled out the idea, but I certainly know that I could never be as dedicated to motherhood as Kathy is. I would have to find a "happy-medium", which I'm still not sure is even possible. At least this book can help anyone who is seriously thinking about foster care. I hope everyone who cares about kids reads this book, and those who have a "not-so-subtle sense of elitism" might also gain some much needed realistic perspective on our public systems. It's going to take a lot of understanding to mend the circle and everyone needs do more for the next generations. Like Kathy, I know I will continue to try to do my part.
