Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com

Summary:

In spite of an unprecedented period of growth and prosperity, the poverty rate in the United States remains high relative to the levels of the early 1970s and relative to those in many industrialized countries today. Understanding Poverty brings the problem of poverty in America to the fore, focusing on its nature and extent at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Looking back over the four decades since the nation declared war on poverty, the authors ask how the poor have fared in the market economy, what government programs have and have not accomplished, and what remains to be done. They help us understand how changes in the way the labor market operates, in family structure, and in social welfare, health, and education policies have affected trends in poverty. Most significantly, they offer suggestions for changes in programs and policies that hold real promise for reducing poverty and income inequality.

Great Textbook
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

This was one of our textbooks for a class on inequality and poverty in a graduate public policy program. Which means, unlike the only other reviewer of this book, I've actually read substantial portions of it. This book talks about poverty from a wide variety of perspectives, from unemployment, to housing markets, it provides an overview of welfare and welfare reform, what we've done right, where we're still not meeting the need. It also discusses how those who study poverty have sometimes missed the point. The book is soundly researched and supported by statistical data and analysis. The writers do not presume to know all of the answers, but you'll feel having read it, that they've all thought deeply about these issues. If you want to understand poverty in the US, this is the book to read. Once you've read it, you will be a person who knows more about poverty than what most uninformed people 'know' from having sat in their barcolounger in front of the tv.
