Summary:

More than any other artifact of modern technology, the automobile has shaped our physical, social, and cultural environment. At the same time, the history of the automobile demonstrates how decisions made by governments, entrepreneurs, and the general public have strongly affected the automobile's evolution. Cars and Cultures provides a succinct yet comprehensive history of the automobile. While the book highlights the technical changes that altered the appearance and performance of automobiles, it also explores the political, economic, social, and cultural forces that shaped the car's development. Because of the wide-ranging impact of the automobiles, no history would be complete without covering the components essential for our automotive-based transportation system—roads and highways, gasoline production, traffic laws, governmental regulation— as well as the other aspects of our social and cultural history that were deeply affected by the history of the automobile—labor unions, suburbanization, travel and recreation, and the fast-food industry.

Anyone fascinated by the history of the automobile will find much of interest in this volume. Students and general readers will find such information as:

· 4,192 cars produced in the U.S. in 1900, 1,681 were steam-powered, 1,575 were electrics, and only 936 used internal combustion engines

· General John Pershing organized a convoy of 79 trucks that crossed the U.S. from Washington to San Francisco in 1919. Hampered by the poor state of the roads upon which they traveled, the trucks averaged only fifty miles a day, and needed 56 days to complete their journey

· In 1960, the entire Japanese automobile industry exported fewer than 1000 cars to the United States; by the early 1980s, it became such a threat to the U.S. auto industry that the U.S. government limited Japanese imports to 1.65 million cars per year.

Although focused on the United States, it is global in scope, with comparisons to how the automobile developed in Europe, Japan, and elsewhere. The volume includes a chronology of the automobile's evolution, a glossary of technical terms, a selected bibliography, and more than 20 photographs and illustrations.

Great for teaching quick and provocative history of automobiles

I've just finished using this book in a course on car cultures, and for a quick survey of how we got to today, it is fantastic. It's accessible and crams enough into each 20 page chapter to spark conversations in a million different directions, whether one wants to delve deeper into the social implications of innovation or springboard into the larger historical forces that are entwined with the development of the car. The material is interesting enough to engage even those completely uninterested in cars for their own sake.

As a teaching text, put this one high on the list for any anthropology/sociology/history class dealing with changes in the 19th-20th century (select chapters could also be of interest in politics or economics classes). The whole book can be covered in a week if you're driving your students hard, two weeks if you want more time to unfold the themes.

For readers who are interested in how the car changed our lives in different decades, or who are trying to get a grip on any technological innovation, this is a good overview with a useful bibliography for learning more.

the tale of cars, road, gasoline freshly written and accurately documented

"Cars and culture" is the first of the series 'technographies' I have actually purchased. At the start , I was a bit reluctant of the simplicity and didactic aspect of the work , but gradually I realised that these aspects were its very power. The book surfs without any effort bewteen facts, anecdotes, illustrations and unveils a strong history from the dawn of the car to the situation traffic finds itself trapped into .Timeline, graphics, glossary and bibliography are 'to the point' and highly effective .
The book is written in a clear and entertaining style ranging this fine little book on the shelves of documentary literature.

An intriguing survey
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

The car has shaped the very fabric of American society, and its history shows how decisions at all levels of government and society have been shaped by the auto. Volti's history covers the technology behind the car's development, plus the accompanying roads, traffic laws, gas production, and regulation which accompanied fostering of the auto as a way of American life. An intriguing survey evolves.
