Summary:

Although several books on the administration and scoring of tests have been made available to the neuropsychologist, there has yet been no publication devoted solely to presenting and critiquing the available normative data for neuropsychological tests. Aiming to fill this gap, the Handbook of Normative Data for Neuropsychological Assessment has been written to help guide the busy clinician, researcher, or graduate student to the most appropriate set of normative data for comparison purposes.

For many years neuropsychologists have felt a pressing need for a reference volume of normative data on neuropsychological tests. This book meets that need and stands alone in the field. The first three chapters are devoted to background issues: the philosophy and methods of neuropsychological evaluation, statistical methods, and the interface between clinical neuropsychology and other clinical practice specialties. The subsequent seventeen chapters present normative data and critical reviews of normative reports on the most commonly used neuropsychological tests: Trail Making, Color Trails, Stroop, Auditory Consonant Trigrams, Boston Naming, Verbal Fluency Tests, Rey-Osterreith Complex Figure, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning, Hooper Visual Organization Test, Seashore Rhythm, Speech Sound Perception, Tactile Performance, Finger Tapping, Grip Strength (Dynamometer), Grooved Pegboard, Category Test, and the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS, WMS-R and WMS III). Information tables throughout the book show the clinician which normative data to utilize depending on the age, sex, educational level, handedness, IQ and ethnicity of their patients. Readers have the option of going through the text containing the review of the normative data for a particular test, or simply using the data locator table to quickly identify the appropriate data set for summary test interpretation.

The Handbook of Normative Data for Neuropsychological Assessment makes a uniquely valuable and long-awaited contribution to the practice of neuropsychology. It would be welcomed by teachers, researchers and graduate students as well as practitioners. No other book has such a clear focus on the interpretation of neuropsychological test results or provides so strong a framework for making critical judgements about studies that report normative data. They post corrections to the book, updates of recent normative studies not included in the first edition, and other announcements and links of interest to the neuropsychologist.

Got it all
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Only book that has all the norms together. I've been making do without one of these for years and now I have it I'm wondering why. Perfect accompanyment to Spreen & Strauss and Lezak.

An excellent and scientifically informed resource
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

The Handbook is an excellent and scientifically informed resource for practicing neuropsychologists. Each author is an expert in the field and they have assembled a wonderful complement to several other primary texts inthe field. This is a must-read / must-have for any practitioner or consumer of neuropsycholgical services.

Excellent Reference - a must have!
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

This is a terrific addition to the library of practicing neuropsycologists. The authors have really done their homework and it is clearly evident that they are excellent scholars. Each of the NP tests reviewed in this book (popularly used tests and some lesser known ones), which is by no means an exhaustive review of all NP tests, is a tour de force of a literature review, a critical analysis, and recommendations. The reader is struck by the huge amount of research that the authors did, and the work that went into such integration. I don't think this norm reference, however, can stand alone, notwithstanding its excellence, since it presents a selection of NP tests and does not try to be all inclusive. But rest assured that those tests discussed are presented comprehensively. Practicing neuropsychologists will also want Spreen & Strauss, of course, as well as regular updated norms of other tests. But this text goes a long way in helping to solve the 'norms problem' in contemporary clinical neuropsychology. It really is a must have!
