Summary:

Voted Best Health Book, USA Booknews National Awards.
Your genes don't control your health or happiness outcomes; in fact many of the choices you make turn genes on or off. Author Dawson Church applies the insights of the new field of Epigenetics (epi=above, i.e. control above the level of the gene) to healing. Citing 417 scientific studies, he shows how consciousness - in the form of beliefs, altruism, optimism, meditation, emotions, and energy psychology methods like EFT - can trigger the expression of DNA strands. He focuses on a class of genes called Immediate Early Genes or IEGs. These genes turn on within a few seconds of a stimulus. They can be triggered by thoughts or emotions ("I loved that unexpected gift of roses Bill gave me" or "I'm so mad about what Uncle John said at the Christmas party") as well as spiritual experiences, and acts of kindness. Many IEGs are regulatory genes turn on other genes that affect specific aspects of our immune system, such as the production of white blood cells that destroy attacking bacteria and viruses. Epigenetics thus influences our health every day.

He coins the new term "Epigenetic Medicine" to describe healing techniques with epigenetic effects. He also summarizes the science behind the infant fields of Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine, both of which offer promising epigenetic medical therapies, and describes examples of the powerful personal breakthroughs being achieved by therapists, doctors, athletes, and entrepreneurs practicing these techniques. The Genie in Your Genes shows that there is a sound theoretical framework, based on credible experiments, for understanding these astonishing results, and predicts that the insights of Epigenetic Medicine will dramatically advance the fields of both medicine and psychology in the coming decade.

Best of all, The Genie in Your Genes demonstrates that, by taking control of our consciousness and using it to influence our genetic expression, we can sometimes bypass years of therapy, as well as harmful drugs and invasive surgeries, to, in effect, do continuous genetic engineering on our own bodies. This can produce both immediate relief from long-standing anxieties and neuroses, as well as "miraculous" healing of pain, autoimmune diseases, and other symptoms.

Among a new crop of books that chart the way to a positive health future, The Genie in Your Genes stands out as a scientifically rigorous yet inspiring indicator of a future medicine that links soul to body and mind.

Documented Validation At last!

Finally! a book that powerfully presents the mechanics of the processes that every dedicated practitioner of such sacred technologies as Qigong, Tai Chi, Yoga, meditation, and contemplative prayer has benefited from for the last couple of thousand years!

Ever since I began studying DNA genetics, I couldn't help but wonder why nature would go to all the trouble to embed the entire genetic code of every organism on the planet within the nucleus of every single one of it's cells. It mattered little if it was composed of one cell or a trillion. The entire code was there. Why? What could possibly account for such incredible largess if genes were simply a one-time reproductive template? Now, thanks to Dr. Church, the answer is presented clearly and convincingly at last.

What a wondrous world of endless possibility and transformation his work brings to light. And how refreshing to have such a wealth of documented research offered to support his conclusions,

This book is destined to become a classic the field of 21st century health and wellness literature.

A facinating look at a newly emerged science of epigenetics

"The Genie in your Genes" by Dawson Church is a captivating introduction into the field of epigenetics, which has to do with effects on the phenotype or physical appearance and on gene expression by the outside factors that have nothing to do with changing the DNA sequence itself. Non-genetic factors like stress and other psychological influences can affect gene expression and cause genes to behave differently. In the past, the scientific community used to believe that genes cannot be affected or changed in such a way. Now, however, there is plenty of evidence proving that gene expression can be influenced by something as abstract as a continuous thought. The book shows that a common belief of a person being born and having a genetic code, DNA, which is set in stone and cannot be changed in any way, is not correct. DNA is constantly influenced by our everyday life, and especially, by our psychological health.

I do not wish to spoil the book and will just say that the text is well-written and meant for a wide audience, not just the scientific community. It provides a fresh look into Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine, a non-traditional kind of medicine that does not require prescription drugs. Most importantly, "The Genie in your Genes" shows how important it is to always believe in yourself and your successes, and how crucial it is to be optimistic and happy, no matter what kind of struggle is faced. A positive psychological mind set and outlook helps the whole body to achieve the optimal equilibrium. If a person believes in himself or herself, he or she has a greater chance of accomplishing those goals, whether it is something like career advancement or a fight with cancer.

I would strongly recommend reading this book to everyone interested in learning a little bit of everything: psychology, biology, and overall human being. Having some scientific training myself, this book was particularly interesting to me, but I am sure that everyone, who is curious, will find this book to be a fun and useful read.

Compulsive Reading that Should be Compulsory

"The Genie in Your Genes", is one of the most useful books I have come across in a long time for anyone in the therapeutic professions. The importance of the mind-body connection in diagnosis and healing has been gaining increasing traction through the work of such ground-breaking pioneers as Candace Pert, David Feinstein and Bruce Lipton. What Dawson Church has done is to weave the work of the many scientists and researchers in this area over the last century into an impressively comprehensive overview, and in a narrative so lucid that anyone should be able to understand it. In fact reading this book was one "Aha" moment after another for me, as I read things I had heard, and even lectured on many times before, but somehow they were placed in a context that made fresh and compelling sense.

The implications of this work are profound, not only for understanding the mechanisms at play in disease and wellness, but also for understanding the power of perceptions and beliefs in creating the social and political realities we must deal with every day. I would make this book required reading for just about every discipline, and certainly all therapeutic modalities.

Modern science meets ancient beliefs

This is complex science well illustrated and easy to read. Shows how our genes are affected by emotional and physical experiences. This is how we inherit experiences from our ancestors. Shows how genes can be reset with prayer & energy medicine. Gives practices you can use yourself. Fascinating and amazing stuff.

Are you interested in knowing more about your ability to heal yourself? Then you might enjoy reading through "Genie in your Genes: Epigenetic Medicine and the New Biology of Intention" by Dawson Church.

Using hundreds of studies to support his work, in addition to several real-life examples, Church explains your body's ability to control the expression of DNA strands. Faith, emotions, intentions, and beliefs are all part of this emerging field of science that indicates we have more control over our body than we might realize.

It is this book's claim that, "...by taking control of our consciousness and using it to influence our genetic expression, we can sometimes bypass years of therapy, as well as harmful drugs and invasive surgeries, to, in effect, do continuous genetic engineering on our own bodies. This can produce both immediate relief from long-standing anxieties and neuroses, as well as "miraculous" healing of persistent physical conditions, especially autoimmune diseases."

I have to admit I approached the book with a healthy dose of skepticism. It sounded very New Age to me. After spending many hours reading "The Genie in Your Genes", I'm convinced that this is an area of science that needs additional exploration. The overwhelming evidence not only validates what the author states, but his in-depth look into topics such as: how your body reads your mind, beliefs and biochemistry, types of genes, electrical medicine and the use of energy medicine in hospitals leaves the reader unable to deny how important Epigenetic Medicine could be to our overall health.

What I was very impressed by was the discussion on the importance of faith and prayer, and the abilities of healers, something not always discussed in relation to science. There is also the citing of real-life examples where medical miracles have been performed without surgery or medicine of any kind.

The one challenge I experienced while reading "The Genie in Your Genes" is that there are so many studies cited and so much information provided, that not only can it read like a textbook in sections, it can become overwhelming. The first two chapters flowed smoothly along, but after that there is a wealth of medical information that draws the author away from the more conversational tone that allowed the book to flow so easily in the beginning. It does return to that easy flow toward the end, but it made for some dificult reading in the middle.

This book wraps up with an explanation of the Ten Principles of Epigentic Medicine and Practices of Epigenetic Medicine. It also has three appendices, which include a an EFT Basic Recipe to get you started, a Five Minute Energy Routine, and information on Church's nonprofit organization, the Soul Medicine Institute.

This is an interesting and inspiring book! No wonder it won the Best Health Book Award from USA Book News.
