Based on the latest data, notably from his own research group, Jürgen Tautz provides a wonderful insight into the realms of bees. In contrast to the view of bee colonies as perfect societies of selfless individuals ruled by a queen, Tautz introduces them as a "superorganism", a self organizing and complex adaptive system based on a network of communication; a fascinating result of evolution, a mammal in several bodies. The entire range of astonishing bee activities is described. Remarkable action photographs never shown before present bees busy with cell cleaning, caring for the brood, serving in the queen's court, visiting flowers, receiving nectar, producing honey, comb building, entrance guarding, heating and cooling. Spotlights include bees grooming, swarming, fighting, telephoning, sleeping and communicating by high-toned beeping, scents and dances. | Average Customer Rating: best book I have read about bees with great photos I have just read four books about bees (we have two hives now) and this was by far the best. It is not about bee keeping but about bees in general and I learned so much. The photos were fantastic. I first bought it on the kindle which I can not recommend since you can not really see the wonderful photos. So I ordered it again in hard copy. A Gift For My Husband, I Couldn't Put It Down. It was a little more money than I'd normally spend on a book that I was just buying for pleasure. I bought it for my husband. He keeps bees and has read every book he can get his hands on. He knew a lot of the things in the book already, but there were some interesting new things he learned, too. I learned a lot and especially enjoyed all the superorganism stuff. Beautiful photos and just really fascinating info. Fantastic This book is wonderful if you want to know the scientific background of Bees. The photos alone are worth having this book in your library. It is a little intense reading, but it will be worth it in the end.You will not go away with out taking in some new information on Bees Very Informative This is a great book. Dr. Tautz is an excellent writer and uses fine examples to demonstrate his points, such as pictoral representations of what bees see. The pictures are some of the finest I have seen of bees, and would probably be worth the purchase just because of them. If you're looking for some deeper information beyond basic beekeeping or basic physiology and behavior, this is an excellent addition to your library. It certainly is to mine. The Buzz About Bees Buzz Clearly written with beautiful photographs to illustrate topics discussed. As a hobby bee keeper, I have found it wonderfully informative and have sent a copy to my daughter who teaches biology at the University level in the UK. I highly recommend for anyone who is interested in bees, nature, and/or our world. | |
