There are a lot of details in this textbook. For chemistry majors, it might be preferable but for engineering students, it is a disaster.

It's an excellent reference to those practice conjugation of proteins and nucleic acids. It provides detail experiment conditions and tips to set up the experiment correctly and successfully.

This book is not one that's meant to be read from cover to cover. For the academic seeking to build a molecule or put together particulate systems, conjugate proteins onto some sort of substrate, modify surfaces to produce certain biologically active moieties, etc., this book is a must-have reference that contains:
- Clear explanation of what kind of chemistry is involved
- Concise, easy to follow outline of reaction conditions that must be kept in mind.
- Good figures and diagrams of the reactions of interest
- Well-researched protocols that serve as a point of reference for your experimental plans.

This edition is a significant upgrade from the previous edition, with newly written chapters on microspheres and quantum dots, among some. Whenever I need help figuring out how to attach certain biomolecules to various surfaces in my research, this is my go-to book, and I have seen plenty of labs in my area that have at least one copy of this book on the shelf.

Overall, probably too heavy to read from cover to cover, but makes for an awesome desk reference for grad students and researchers in biologicalk and biotech-related disciplines.

I am always extremely leary of biochemistry and/or bioconjugate books because if you're looking for a specific answer, you're not going to find it in a book. Instead, you have to bother those with experience and learn from their techniques. HOWEVER, this book is an exception in the highest regard! I was able to easily derive a surface chemistry protocol in around 10 minutes, and it only took me that long because I was fascinated on how direct this book was. Basically here's what you get:
1) Easy to read/decipher information
2) Fantastic Index
3) Quick answers that I couldn't even find on Google

Best of all, in my opinion, is that each section is not prefaced with the past history of who/what/where/when/why, which although sometimes interesting, gives you no assistance in the lab.
