"Deeper Reading" will be a book that I will use religiously. There are applicable lessons for target students as well as pre-ap. Great Resource! I was so surprised at the number of ideas in this book that could be adapted to the lower grades! Gallagher is such a gifted writer--this would be an enlightening read for anyone involved in teaching and motivating young readers. I loved the idea of second-draft reading! Students have the idea that once is enough and this is far from beneficial if we want readers to extract deeper meaning. He includes student samples along with many lesson ideas. There are even some activities for the reader to do to get an actual feel what you will be asking your students will do. He shows the difference between assigning and teaching. Well done! Practical and Effective Strategies For the novice teacher and experienced teacher alike, this book is a must if you are serious about teaching reading. After reviewing the text online, I immediately went out and bought it, although I should have bought two since mine is always being borrowed! Gallagher shares not just the how of the strategies but the why, which makes you more likely to try them with your students. Clear examples and an easy-to-follow style make it a quick read, and a book to which you will often refer. Easy Read for a "How To" Reading Book Mr. Gallagher captures your interest with his style of writing that makes reading this book easy. He provides a great amount of strategies to try in the classroom. Overall his ideas to improve student comprehension while reading were fun to read.
