I have only finished half of the book but for the 'learning Spanish' side of the book, it is great! It provides the spanish part of the words, then translates them into English. It also has 'key' terms defined and at the end, you must 'test' out to the next chapter. It is very well done and I study Spanish alot! My only critique would be the lack of phonetic pronounciations for the Spanish words in the book. Other than, that, I would highly recommend the book!

As an adult trying to learn Spanish I've tried a variety of methods, from listening to the Pimsleur programs (great for everyday speaking comprehension) to taking an introductory Spanish course at my local community college (to learn grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.). I found this story to be a great way first to listen, read the text and learn, and then to play the CD in the car the next day on my way to work to reinforce what I learned.

For me, you just can't beat a good evening college course that combines vocabulary, speaking comprehension and reading. The downside is that you have to do the homework on a schedule that's set for you. If you want to learn Spanish at your own pace, this is an inexpensive, fun way to supplement whatever other materials you're using.

By the way, the author has a similar version in French.

This is one of the best Spanish books I have seen, and I am obsessive about buying books. My Spanish teacher and I could not put it down.

As is stated everywhere, this book is really unique (it's bilingual; it's a mystery story; and it has grammar sections and audio). The result is a truly fun way to learn lots of Spanish. And the dramatic way in which the Latin American narrators speak on the CD adds the critical need to hear naturally spoken Spanish. (A question was raised as to the origin of the speakers. So I did some research and verified that the speakers are indeed Latin American.) I highly recommend this book to students and adults. You won't be able to put it down!
