I was always intrigued to read the Gita from the first page to the last. I tried reading it online and I was never able to get through the first few pages. Upon the recommendation of a dear friend of mine, I got hold of Eknath Easwaran's translation of the Bhagavad Gita and all I can say is that the reading was a profound spiritual experience!

I highly recommend Easwaran's series (which includes the Upanishads and the Dhammapada) for a fascinating journey in to the heart of Eastern Philosophy and Religions. Not only are the translations so very beautiful and easy to read, each chapter has a few pages of introduction to help create the contextual setting of the passages to follow as well as Easwaran has a lengthy introduction (anywhere from 60 to 100 pages!) on the scripture you are about to read!

Brilliant! Also recommended are Easwaran's The Upanishads and The Dhammapada.

I am reading this book as part of my homework for my 200 hour yoga teacher training and I can say that I think this is the most useful and inspiring version of the Gita that I have ever read. I did have another version, but it was very difficult to understand. This version is really enjoyable. I am learning a lot about other aspects of yoga that do not have anything to do with the asanas, and I think that is the point!

Easwaran has produced a very accessible translation of the classic Hindu text, with very helpful commentary and preparatory remarks. Students of the Gita for the first time, or those who wish to revisit a classic, will appreciate the effort that Easwaran has gone to, so that the Gita is intelligible in the full context of its Hindu background. Easwaran has dug out the meaning and the spirit of the Gita very effectively, and has helped explain why it was Gandhi's favorite text.

This spiritual book has many nuggets of wisdom, and has been handed down through the ages first by sages and now we can read about Lord Krishna through the eyes and ears of Sanjaya. The Gita is full of beautifully written words which conjure up thoughts and questions around our own spirituality. Whether we belong to a particular religion, or we are searching for answers, this book may help us understand who we are, if we are open to thoughts which may be outside of our paradigms.

Eknath Easwaran provides a translation which is fluid and the comments for each chapter help to create better understanding, especially for those who have not been accustomed to Hindu customs or beliefs. For me, this book helped me open my heart and mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before, and I am grateful. I especially liked the explanation of the gunas and their meaning.

The translation is readable and poetic. The general and chapter introductions are very enlightening for the novice reader of Hindu scripture. This is a great book for anyone interested in exploring the Hindu religion.
