Summary:

Over the last year, award-winning journalist and videographer Max Blumenthal has been behind some of the most sensational (and funniest) exposes of Republican machinations. Whether it was his revelation that Sarah Palin was "anointed" by a Kenyan priest famous for casting out witches, or his confronting Republican congressional leaders and John McCain's family at the GOP convention about the party's opposition to sex education (and hence, the rise in teen pregnancies like that of Palin's daughter), or his expose of the eccentric multimillionaire theocrat behind California's Prop 8 anti-gay marriage initaive, Blumenthal has become one of the most important and most constantly cited journalists on how fringe movements are becoming the Republican Party mainstream.

Republican Gomorrah is a bestiary of dysfunction, scandal and sordidmess from the dark heart of the forces that now have a leash on the party. It shows how those forces are the ones that establishment Republicans-like John McCain-have to bow to if they have any hope of running for President. It shows that Sarah Palin was the logical choice of a party in the control of theocrats. But more that just an expose, Republican Gomorrah shows that many of the movement's leading figures have more in common than just the power they command within conservative ranks. Their personal lives have been stained by crisis and scandal: depression, mental illness, extra-marital affairs, struggles with homosexual urges, heavy medication, addiction to pornography, serial domestic abuse, and even murder. Inspired by the work of psychologists Erich Fromm, who asserted that the fear of freedom propels anxiety-ridden people into authoritarian settings, Blumenthal explains in a compelling narrative how a culture of personal crisis has defined the radical right, transforming the nature of the Republican Party for the next generation and setting the stage for the future of American politics.

Shocking research into the highjacking of the Republican Party
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

As a past Republican, this book details the stealing of a party and running it into the ground. The Republican party has lost its way and has no leadership to offer
positive alternatives that are solutions for the Nation's problems.

Max Blumenthal's research exposes the misplaced ideas of the party.

Max Knows This Terrain

Max Blumenthal has been reporting on the religious right for some time and this book is an excellent chronical of this strange, contridictory and tortured movement and its people. Not for the faint of heart!

Frightening look at authortianism as it undermines our democracy
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

As one who has also read Dean's book Conservatives without Conscience, this is a much closer look into the actual events that have attempted to make the U.S. into a Taliban-like theocracy. There is a reason for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and it is to prevent the takeover the government by the Farwells, Robertsons, Dobsons, and their thugs. It is a must read for anyone concerned about the future of this nation. Extremists from either the left or the right are to be feared and those of us are both Christian and populate the vast middle of the political spectrum need to stand against them.

I found that the discussion of the abstinence only sex education section most interesting. As a faculty member of a major SEC university, I conducted research on exactly what type of behavior billions of dollars were supposed to prevent--thinking lustful thoughts, holding hands, ect. A questionnaire was sent to the 50 state directors of these programs. Dobson's people got a hold of the questionnaire and called the Chancellor of my university, the governor of the state (a BSC minister/Republican), and several members of the Board of Trustees and told them to fire me because I was the devil. Thank God for tenure--I was not fired but I did get an article in a major health education journal about this event. It is clear that there are questions or research that should not be conducted from these wingnuts perspective. We have spent billions of state and Federal dollars and have accomplished less than nothing. In fact it has harmed so many lives because it has changed safe sex behavior of those in their teens and 20s. The chapter in the book discussing this issue is on target. Again, read the book!

Must read to understand current political context
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Max Blumenthal has done what few contemporary commentators have managed to do. He has sifted through the extreme rhetoric of the Right Wing of the Republican Party to analyze the underlying conditions that have fueled their assault on our democracy. Republican Gomorrah helps to cast a bright light on the dark side of Fundamentalist Christianity and its bigotry. In doing so, his book goes a long way toward helping those seeking to understand why ordinary Americans often align themselves with the interests of the rich and powerful against their own well-being. It is a familiar strategy -- divide and conquer -- that wraps itself in the flag and twisted interpretations of the Bible. Blumenthal has provided a well-read and richly documented account of the tendency toward authoritarianism in American politics. Highly recommended.

Difficult and Disturbing
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

The author of this book was interviewed on the radio, and I was so impressed with him, I decided to purchase the book. It took me a very long time to get through it because it is so disturbing. It is not something I would read twice, but that is because of the content, not the authorship or writing style. Most of what is in this book, I already knew, but the depth of depravity was upsetting. So, all in all, a well written book on a very nasty, but important to know, subject.
