| Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com | On Combat looks at what happens to the human body under the stresses of deadly battle the impact on the nervous system, heart, breathing, visual and auditory perception, memory - then discusses new research findings as to what measures warriors can take to prevent such debilitations so they can stay in the fight, survive, and win. A brief, but insightful look at history shows the evolution of combat, the development of the physical and psychological leverage that enables humans to kill other humans, followed by an objective examination of domestic violence in America. The authors reveal the nature of the warrior, brave men and women who train their minds and bodies to go to that place from which others flee. After examining the incredible impact of a few true warriors in battle, On Combat presents new and exciting research as to how to train the mind to become inoculated to stress, fear and even pain. Expanding on Lt. Col. Grossman s popular "Bulletproof mind" presentation, the book explores what really happens to the warrior after the battle, and shows how emotions, such as relief and self-blame, are natural and healthy ways to feel about having survived combat. A fresh and highly informative look at post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) details how to prevent it, how to survive it should it happen, how to come out of it stronger, and how to help others who are experiencing it. On Combat looks at the critical importance of the debriefing, when warriors gather after the battle to share what happened, critique, learn from each other and, for some, begin to heal from the horror. The reader will learn a highly effective breathing technique that not only steadies the warrior s mind and body before and during the battle, but can also be used afterwards as a powerful healing device to help separate the emotion from the memory. Concluding chapters discuss the Christian/Judeo view of killing in combat and offers powerful insight that Lt. Col. Grossman has imparted over the years to help thousands of warriors understand and come to terms with their actions in battle. A final chapter encourages warriors to always fight for justice, not vengeance, so that their remaining days will be healthy ones filled with pride for having performed their duty morally and ethically. This information-packed book ploughs new ground in its vision, in its extensive new research and startling findings, and in its powerful, revealing quotes and anecdotes from top people in the warrior community, people who have faced the toxic environment of deadly combat and now share their wisdom to help others. On Combat is easy to read and powerful in scope. It is a true classic that will be read by new and veteran warriors for years to come. | Average Customer Rating: Great book This is a great book that describes the effects of stress in combat. The book is addictive from the moment you pick it up. help! HELP! Is there a book out there that talks about humans reactions to violence that isn't like this book?!?! I need something thats scientific, with sources I can vet for opinion, bias, or methodology. I need something that is free from anecdote and jingo-ism! I need something that does not use these anecdotes and lexicon to support the authors peculiar mantra's and social theories. I need an author that doesnt place every american into a few morally loaded categories, that crumble instantly when you have a real need to understand another human. (Soldiers overseas, police officers that show up at your door, or your childs dorm!) I need a book that doesnt make the populace of America look alternately like a sea of sheep or a jungle of hyperviolent over video gamed youth, with the police isolated by their moral altruism in both cases!!!! I want a book the doesnt quote an obscure (to most) 15th century philosopher to provide the main moral guidelines of its philosophy! If you are a professional in a field related to the subject of the book, you better go do the fact checking and find the primary sources. The people around you or under your command rate that level of scholarliness. IT IS A MUST READ...FOR DOLFIERS AND THEIR LEADERS This book really opened my eyes to a few things and re enforced things I have been saying about the watering down of our "training" we don't train our soldiers to build a resistance to stress...This is what our Joint Chiefs need to read Fascinating I found the book fascinating. Started with my brother-in-law getting it for Christmas. I looked over his shoulder at it and he told me a bit about it. Then I ordered it through the library and read it while recovering from giving birth, and knew that I wanted to own the book.
I'm having a hard time figuring out how to give a general review. I liked the ideas of preparing oneself with phones and emergency numbers (among other things). Reality perception distortions can be as fantastic as movie making effects. Learning how to increase your Red Zone, avoiding the Black Zone. Life is more sci-fi than I thought!
I have never been a big video game proponent, and this book gave me further reason to maintain my stance.
Highly recommended for those who expect to find themselves in a combat situation, or are just plain curious. Regardless of gender, all warriors need to read this information. Written by those who've experienced deadly conflict in war and peace for those who've been there, those who expect to be there and for their loved ones who share their warriors life. The training that went wrong, the why and how training's bad practices have been corrected and the improvements explained in detail. With personal accounts from those who have been on the firing line in war protecting country and on the streets protecting people, supported by the best science available. After reading this book you'll see it all from a different and accepting perspective. Truly a must read. | |
