As a retired veteran from the 1st Gulf War, Bosnia and Haiti, I really appreciated the candor in his book. Unfortunately Shannon internalizes personally the spoils of war and the bad guys' ruthless activities to prove their hideousness (if that's a word)... The story demonstrates very well the American Fighting man spirit - the do-right attitude but also the force we can bring to bear on our enemies if you piss us off. I wish Shannon a speedy psychological recovery - you can feel that he's going to get it, but isn't quite there and suffering.
The sad reality is that he's one of so MANY coming home with the battle scars in his brain, not to mention the actual wounds. I truly hope the money he makes from this book will help him continue to receive the counseling to see the disonnect and that he may become the new person he is meant to be. Battle changes us all and we become different people as a result of it. It's what we do with it.

This book is well-paced, well-written, provocative and powerful. The first half is an informative and voyeuristic look at ground troops in pre- and post-surge Iraq, told first-hand by a tank officer. The second half has an emotional and narrative thrust that is uncompromising, haunting and above all else, honest. I couldn't put this book down. Read it. There are no easy answers, no tidy resolutions... this is life.
