Customer Reviews:Average Customer Rating: an exceptional read Wonderfully written and researched. An extremely fine companion book to the Army at Dawn, which covered the US Army in North Africa. The author spends lavish amounts of time trying to create context and color, so much so it overwhelms at times. One of the interesting points throughout the book is how much of this campaign was under supported in men and material and largely unwanted by the US high command, who were much more interested in prepping for the real show in France. There was very little glamor or glitz in the Italian campaign after Patton left the stage in Sicily, and Patton comes in for very little praise here and neither do most of the other Allied commanders here, US or British. But the troops themselves soldier on and persevere and the author does an outstanding job of making them human and making the reader feel and regret their sacrifice. Great Depiction This is Vol. II of Rick Atkinson's trilogy. I just finished Vol. I and like Vol. I, this book is full of interesting details that depict the actual feelings, emotions, and frustrations of those involved. The book is definitely of value to anyone wanting to learn about the invasion of Europe beginning with Sicily. Vol. I dealt with the conquest of North Africa. down and dirty I'm going to make this a very quick review. This a great book on the Italian campaign it is a general look at that campaign but Atkinson does a wonderful job of blending primary sources into his writings. I have not read a better account of the Italian campaign and my wife a WWII historian and teacher was amazed at the information in this book. Wonderful for either the novice or the expert, this is a book for all and is a pleasure to read. Atkinson's ability to blend primary to secondary sources and keep the story lucid, historically accurate and readable makes this a remarkable work. Received book in a good amount of time My book made it to me quickly and in great condition! All one can ask for :) My reason for buying this book I bought this book as a gift for my son. His father was in the army in WW II. He was an early draftee (mid-1942) who was sent to North Africa, Sicilly, and Italy. | | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
