Customer Reviews:Average Customer Rating: A View into a Terrifying Experience Simon Winchester brings his expertise at combining science and history into a readable narrative to the late 1800's explosion of Krakatoa. You start to really feel like you are there and have some understanding of a world with slow communication and limited ability to understand events as they occur. I often watch the news now and think we don't really "get" what is happening but reading Krakatoa I see how far we have come. The book is a little slow to get going, but the actual narrative of the events around the eruption and its aftermath are enthralling. an excellent geological as well as historical & sociological study This excellent geological, as well as historical & socialogical study is a must-read in order to grasp the full extent of interaction between human society and Nature. It's also a heads-up regarding the realities of life for anyone living along an active tectonic border. Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883 The book is more informative than the shows that I have seen on TV. There is a lot that has been explained. Thank you. Krakatoa the whole story If you ever wanted to know the real story if the Greatest Volcanic Eruption in modern times, this is it. Not only the eruption itself but a lot of side stories about what happened to some of the people involved. This story is filled with interesting facts and the exact order of what happened and when. Fantastic reading ! This is my seccond book from Simon Winchester ( the other was The map that changed the World) . | | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
