This is a 600 page text book done on quality paper with beautiful illustrations and photos throughout. For the squeamish about nudity, there is some in the text, for example a full frontal of Michelangelo's David, Ninsun, the Sumerian goddess is a sight to behold!, the beautifully armless but fully endowed Venus.
The book addresses sex, violence and religion openly with the understanding that the Bible also addresses all these issues in an open forthright manner. The art and texts covered allow the student to enter into the great discussions.
This text assumes the student using it will be in seventh grade or above.
Primary books covered are: Genesis Exodus Epic of Gilgamesh Code of Hammurabi I & II Samuel Odyssey Histories Oresteia Plutarch'sLives Theban Trilogy Last Days of socrates Early History of Rome Luke & Acts Aeneid The Twelve Caesars Julius Caesar Revelation
Not enough for you!? There are also 19 secondary books!!
Each book covered has General information such as the author, significance of the work, main characters, summary and setting, and the books worldview. These books are old, but they are still relevant and very exciting to read.
At the end of each book section there are Sessions of writing, reading and discussion to complete. These sessions include comprehension questions, discussion questions for a group, analysis of the text, application to life. There are ample questions to be answered, papers to be written, books to be read in this course that you could easily stretch the course into two years. This text asks questions that make a student think on their own; not just find the answer in the text provided.
There are also a list of further reading books that can be read with the book edition and pages assigned, really just two, Western Civilization by Spielvogel and Art for Young People by Janson. I recommend buying both right from the start.
This is a very full literature, history, logics an overall excellent classical introduction to the Great Books.
I strongly advise (maybe insist) that you purchase the Teacher's Edition. It contains the entire text and answers to all of the questions in disk form for your computer along with a student's text. There are so many books and so many questions answered that it would be the height of foolishness not to buy the Teacher's Edition. | |
