I decided to read this book after seeing the movie "Invictus". I love to read autobiographies of significant historical figures, people who have made a difference in the world. This book is very well written and readable. The thing that strikes me the most is the honesty of Mr. Mandela. He does not try to paint himself as anything but an ordinary human being. His humility is obvious as you read the details of his life, including his mistakes. His life is an incredible example of persistence in the face of unimaginable circumstances. It is sobering to read of how human beings can treat one another based on unimportant external circumstances. As you read about apartheid in South Africa in this book, you come to realize just how horrible it was. Throughout my reading of the book, it caused me to ponder the "apartheid" that occurred in our own country during the same period of history that this book covers. The really incredible aspect of the story is Mr. Mandela's attitude toward his oppressor and the fact that when his party achieved power that the roles were not simply reversed. This book is one I recommend to anyone who is interested in world history and cares about freedom and equality.

An insightful look into the behind-the-scenes struggle for democracy in South Africa ; and a fascinating glimpse into the life of the tenacious and wise Nelson Mandela without whom the struggle could easily have ended in ongoing conflict and violence.

Danny Glover does a wonderful job of reading Mandela's remarkable story. Excellent. It has soul.
