I am grateful that the Sue's pulled no punches in their text. The "invisible veil" of white privilege in the U.S. can only be pierced with sharp rhetoric. I agree with their argument that we are all proponents of racist practices if we don't act to challenge the status quo, which is: White's hold the majority of power, wealth, and the distribution of both in the US. Improvements have been made in certain sectors, but there are still many culturally-insensitive (i.e. biased) institutions and color-blind people that minorities must deal with everyday. To me, proof of the blindness is proved in the polarity of responses and anger that this book engenders among reviewers. Whites don't want the status quo to change, it favors them. By the way, I am white. And I used to be color-blind. I didn't think race mattered, that we were all the same, and that racism was mostly over at the end of the 60's. I'm glad this book woke me up. I know that I will be a better counselor in the future because of it.

I got this book because it was required for a class. Having taken similar classes before, I think this book is fine for people who are just beginning to learn about socio cultural concepts and how they affect the therapy situation. I would liked more complicated case examples. They simplify situations to a great extent and its not that simple in the therapy room! Good read for beginners though.

Sue and Sue's textbook offers a perspective that people working in helping fields like psychotherapy and counseling should hear. It's not easy, and it challenges you to take a good look at the ways in which we all unintentionally can be maintaining and supporting inequity and oppression. It's definitely an important part of my education as a psychologist so far and a perspective through which to view the rest of my work in research, teaching, and counseling. The book uses very absolute language, which I don't always agree with 100%, but you don't have to agree with every word they write to see why a book like this is so important for us all to read. I recommend it but I also hope that if you read it you have a supportive group or teacher to help process the experience.

The book covers the material as well as any I have seen. The text is excellent! For those that feel that they already have a high degree of multicultural competence, it is a great supplement to your experience. For those who have not been exposed to a wide multicultural background....it is simply a must read!!!
