No matter how far behind Miller's students might be when they reach her 6th grade classroom, they end up reading an average of 40 to 50 books a year. Miller's unconventional approach dispenses with drills and worksheets that make reading a chore. Instead, she helps students navigate the world of literature and gives them time to read books they pick out themselves. Her love of books and teaching is both infectious and inspiring. The book includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" that helps parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read. | Average Customer Rating: Big Help for Teachers and Some Help for Parents Admittedly, this book was not important to me as it might be to others. My daugher is already in fourth grade and has been an avid reader since preschool. Amazingly, I found that many of the suggestions given are things we did naturally. For example, she advocates allowing the child's own interest dictate his or her reading material. My wife and I have always been avid readers and brought our daughter to the library at a young age to explore the wonders of books her own way.
Here is where I think the book is more applicable to teachers than parents. Most parents want their children to be good readers but this is far less likely to happen unless they are as well. Children emulate their parents and if reading is important to their parents, then it will probably be so for their child too.
Thus this book may be seen as a bit of a revolutionary move. It is a covert operation to get some children reading in spite of their parents. The problem is that, as the author points out, the methods are not always set up to maximize the child's potential. Perhaps this book can start a major reform. Changed way I teach Reluctantly bought this book after a student's parent recommended it. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I agree with so many points the author makes and found my self reevaluating how I teach reading. I wish I could get our reading department to read it. It just makes sense. Excellent Resource for teachers! This book is dynamic! It really spells out the importance of reading and has helpful ideas and forms to follow and implement in the classroom! I love it! A must-read! The Book Whisperer is a must-read for elementary school teachers. It has helped to solidify my beliefs about the teaching of reading and the necessity of allowing children the time to learn to enjoy reading. I will be sharing it with others at my school. The Book Whisperer The Book Whisperer is a must read for all school teachers and parents alike. The Book Whisperer shows the importance of independent reading using free choice consisting of a variety of genres and how this concept makes good readers. We need to make time to give our students the opportunity to independently read in school. Reading The Book Whisperer, before the opening of the school year, re-opened my eyes to the way my class should and will be run this year. | |
