Customer Reviews:Average Customer Rating: Very Motivating Although I have not finished the book yet, I think it is great as a motivator for doctoral students in the social sciences. In the first two chapters, Single convinces the student that they are capable of finishing a dissertation and offers a road map for how to do so. This is a great book to use alone or with a writing group. A handbook for all ph.d students from Day 1 I am in the 6th year of my Ph.D. program, and I only wish I have had this book the first day when I admitted in the program. From working with bibliography program to developing outlines of your dissertation, this book is full of practical advises and clear work plans for you to move forward with your dissertation both incrementally and comprehensively. The author teaches you how to conduct a literature review, at the same time offers great tips on overcoming the psychological barriers you have on writing. She makes the dissertation process more humane and realistic by recognizing other duties we have in life and shows you how to work around that. As a mom with a 3 years-old, this book give me the confidence that I finish my dissertation in a foreseeable future. Highly recommended! Social Sciences Bible I am doing a PhD in International Politics. Over the course of my undergrad and the last 2 years, I have bought and read carefully 16 other books on how to write a thesis. This is the only one I would recommend. Written for the social sciences, but would still be worth your time if you are in another field. Seriously, this book is really brilliant, get it. For anyone who needs a mentor when they write Every graduate student should be fully supported, encouraged, and guided during the dissertation/thesis phase. Sadly, this is often not the case. Dr. Single is the ideal mentor/advisor everyone should have -- she is patient, practical, wise, and understanding, AND she somehow manages to kindly nudge you into being the most productive writer you can be. I have personally experienced the power of her coaching -- she helped me brainstorm a dissertation topic that led to the publication of my very own book AND she also coached me toward publishing an academic article that won the "Article of the Year" award. If you're feeling the least bit lost, get this book! Any college-level library needs this!
