There is information in this book that you won't find anywhere else. | Average Customer Rating: The Six Figure Speaker The Six Figure Speaker
This book is a worthy investment for any professional speaker willing to create a personal action plan for moving forward in their business. Although it is not an easy fix nor is it light reading, if you want to run a profitable business you can read about practical strategies from professionals who share what has worked for them in areas of planning, prioritizing, marketing, negotiating and adding value for the client. I found it challenging to determine where to begin because there were so many good ideas. As a professional speaker who has until now invested more money in my business than I have earned, I found chapter 2 "What Drives Your Economic Engine?" motivated me to candidly evaluate strengths and areas that need to be improved. Chapter 27- Advanced marketing Tactics for Professional Speakers by Orvel Ray Wilson is filled with invaluable tips that I could start using immediately. Chapter 6 The One Essential Marketing Tool provides practical and inexpensive marketing ideas that can be implemented by one person. There is space in this chapter for you to write your own vision statement, intentions and action steps. Throughout her book, Author, Speakers' Bureau owner, consultant Cathleen Fillmore shares straightforward sound advice about the basic essentials to successfully run the business of speaking. As she says, "It's your call." Inspirational! Motivational! Educational! A must read for Speakers! As a new speaker to the industry, I found Cathleen Fillmore's book, the Six-Figure Speaker more than helpful in supporting me on my journey to becoming a speaking professional. I must gratefully thank Cathleen for putting together such a great guidance tool to support the reader in making the right decisions in regards to contracts, websites, bureaus, referrals, new clients, repeat clients, marketing, setting boundaries and what to charge for your speaking!
As the founder and president of Speaker's Gold Bureau, Cathleen Fillmore who is also a fantastic speaker and mentor as well, is the type of person that you want to get this kind of information from. She doesn't offer to much advice on how-to speak or the basic fundamentals of speaking itself, however she does give you the real facts and the pros and cons of the business side of speaking, how to take it from being a beginner to becoming a pro and a no nonsense approach to getting paid what you are worth! This is what truly matters if you are looking at making speaking your career.
Kudos to Cathleen for also inviting some TOP speakers to share some of their own experience, guidance and practical advice. This really rounds off the book nicely as it gives you a real view into the speaking industry from highly paid and successful speakers who are talking the talk and walking the walk!
Please afford Cathleen Fillmore's book, the Six-Figure Speaker every consideration when seeking a practical guide on making it BIG in the Speaking Industry! Whether you're an amateur or the most seasoned veteran speaker, you will most certainly find great value in this exceptional piece of literature.

I'm looking forward to more from Cathleen... Excellent resource I found this book to be an excellent resource. The author really knows the speaking industry and goes beyond the basics to tell speakers how to excel in this industry. Lawrence Goudge Fluff! This book was faxed in. There are some books that are written from a well thought out outline where an author really wants to take you through a subject from start to finish. This is not one of those books.
It is a collection of thrown together articles from other authors who are trying to sell their own projects. Nothing unscrupulous here...just an utter lack of flow. Just google "Becoming a Speaker Tips" and you could make up the same book in a couple of minutes.
Compare this to Fred Gleeck's "Marketing and Promoting Your our Seminars and Workshops". This book is written by a veteran "in the trenches" author who single handedly takes you through in a turnkey way.
I guess I wouldn't be so hard on the Six Figure book if I hadn't just read Gleeck's book. NO COMPARISON! I would recommend Gleek's book in a heartbeat. So much so that I just threw "the Six Figure Speaker" in the trash. Not for the Novice Cathleen Filmore knows her stuff. This is a business book, not a replacement for toastmasters.
Like one of the other reviewers, I wish this was a bit more stepwise. Also, some of the information is dated. The absence of social networking sites is understandable, as they are rather new. On the other hand, one of the guest writers talks about searching with Archie, which was a pre-web search engine from the late '80's. This should be updated.
Still, you will be able to learn from this book, and I highly recommend it! | |
