Summary:

Persuade a client to buy what you're selling. Energize the boss to act on your ideas. Rally the staff to see themselves as members of your team. No matter what the situation, success in business depends on having effective relationships. Nicholas Boothman's first book, How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less, is "Dale Carnegie for a rushed era" (The New York Times). It has 87,000 copies in print, reprints continuously, and remains in hardcover. Now Boothman brings his innovative system of forging instant connections to the workplace.

This is a book that deals not only with the importance of making a great first impression, but also with ongoing business relationships. Based on the breakthrough idea of "rapport by design," HOW TO CONNECT IN BUSINESS IN 90 SECONDS OR LESS shows how to mine the potential in every situation, from an accidental meeting at the water cooler, to a brainstorming session, to a formal presentation before a large group. It digs into the fundamentals of Persuasion, Purpose, and Personality to get to the basis of self-confidence and effective communication. It covers the traditional business concerns of team building, e-mail and phone relationships, and managing up and managing down. And throughout, creative exercises make the ideas come alive, including "Evaporating Fear," "Making Your Own Good Luck," "Creating Your Ten-Second Commercial," and "Packaging Your Personality."

Not bad for a quick read
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

I picked up this book because I wanted to improve my ability to network and make business contacts. The majority of the book is common sense advice and is fairly helpful. You're not going to read anything particularly novel nor innovative by any means (contrary to what some of these reviews might lead you to believe). It's a quick read and has some good reminders, but it's mostly just good advice slightly adapted to the business world. I'd recommend the book, but don't expect to hear anything you haven't heard before.

Takes some practice
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Essentially this book is about how to pick up on subtle clues that let you understand what makes someone else comfortable. Once you know how to do that, you can structure your message in such a way that breaks down barriers to communication.

Will the book allow you to suddenly gain a hundred new contacts or friends? No.
Will you be able to manipulate anyone to do things they don't want to do? No.

If you follow the book and practice the exercises will you have more success in social situations? Yes.

Connect with others easy

This book is absolutely fantastic. I decided o purchase this book after I picked up the first book by Nicholas. The information is practical and easy to use to fit your own needs. The ideas can be used in every day business. The key I picked up was how important eye contact and a smile is. Yes that is simple information, but it is the simple things that are easy to forget. If you are looking for a book that will impact your business life pick this book up and his other 2. This is a short book for its size.

I read lots of theoretical books, and have written a few. But I must confess that when it comes to practical application, Nicholas Boothman is champ. Very shortly after I began to read this book my wife noticed a change in me. I was actually connecting with people. Ordinary people who had no apparent business importance to me. All I did was put aside the theories and focus on people. Put aside the ego and quit trying to be interesting, but rather to be interested. All the stuff I learned about values, and Abraham Maslow, and behavioral science suddenly came to life in the real world. Boothman engages you from the first page and keeps you engrossed until the last. He begins with a visit with his legendary mentor, Francis Muldoon, who rolls out his philosophy of life in the back of a taxicab ("Capture the imagination and you capture the heart," etc.) and ends his book with a short (and valuable) course in public speaking. Wonderful, inspiring, useful stuff! I also suggest you acquire a copy of "The Four Minute Sell," by Janet G. Elsea, which is available as used copies for a very reasonable cost on Amazon. Together, these two books are an insurance policy against fear and tentativeness in all your relationships.
