Customer Reviews:Average Customer Rating: The Bible for Restoration of Old Photos, Slides, & Negatives This book covers all of the bases for restoring faded, scratched, moldy, dirty and torn photos, negatives and slides. From the basics of scanning(getting the photo or negative into your computer) to all of the tools of restoration you will probably find an answer here. Although much of the book uses Photoshop tools and plugins he also introduces less expensive yet capable software such as Picture Window Pro. As an amateur photographer with a limited budget interested in restoring and preserving precious family photos I couldn't justify the purchase of the $600+ Photoshop package. I tried Photoshop Elements which was OK at the beginning but I soon ran into its limitations. It was Ctein who introduced me to the benefits of using software with full 16-bit vs. 8-bit image editing. Ctein often gives several methods of approaching restoration. Here I discovered Picture Window Pro which, at $89.95 is much more affordable than Adobe's flagship, Photoshop. The book, although softbound, is rugged enough to withstand being carried everywhere in my backpack for over 6 months, to be read at leisure on the train or in waiting rooms. I can't recommend this work strongly enough. Buy it! This book is the real deal When I started scanning 3,000 or so color slides that I had taken over the last 55 years, I discovered that some had deteriorated drastically and dramatically. These were of great value to me, so I set out to buy every book I could find on photo restoration. With the help of this book I was able to recover photos that I thought were hopeless. Along the way, I learned how to improve photos I have taken more recently that I did not realize could be improved. No other author that I have found comes close to Ctein's encyclopedic memory and ability to explain the theory behind the processes. Digital Restoration From Start to Finish: How to repair old and damaged photographs The value of the purchase price was obtained in a few days. I was able to restore an 1899 photo which had faded almost to nothing and display all of the details. Photo Restoration Bible! This book has assisted me greatly, the workflows in the book allow you to easily repair a large array of problem images, it's fantastic. There is much a photo restorer can learn from this book, this book delves into the more advanced features of photoshop to assist even a seasoned photoshopper to learn a few extra tricks. Value for money! Objectionable photo Ctein makes extensive use of a photo of two overweight homosexual women, one nude and one partly clad. One of the women is supposed to be a famous photograher, whose name he gives. If I had known that I had to look at this photo so much, while trying to understand his techniques, I would not have bought this book. I am sure Ctein had many other photos he could have used for an example. This is an example of in-your-face homosexuality. I will not order another book without first examining it. | | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
