We buy “herbal” shampoos that contain industrial chemicals that can threaten our health or contaminate the environment. We dive down to see coral reefs, not realizing that an ingredient in our sunscreen feeds a virus that kills the reef. We wear organic cotton t-shirts, but don’t know that its dyes may put factory workers at risk for leukemia. In Ecological Intelligence, Daniel Goleman reveals why so many of the products that are labeled green are a “mirage,” and illuminates our wild inconsistencies in response to the ecological crisis.
Drawing on cutting-edge research, Goleman explains why we as shoppers are in the dark over the hidden impacts of the goods and services we make and consume, victims of a blackout of information about the detrimental effects of producing, shipping, packaging, distributing, and discarding the goods we buy.
But the balance of power is about to shift from seller to buyer, as a new generation of technologies informs us of the ecological facts about products at the point of purchase. This “radical transparency” will enable consumers to make smarter purchasing decisions, and will drive companies to rethink and reform their businesses, ushering in, Goleman claims, a new age of competitive advantage. | Average Customer Rating: Ecological conscientious purchases Introduced me to the concept of assessing the greeness of my purchases from production of the product to the disposing of the product. Book dragged in parts and, as a consumer, I would have preferred more examples. However, it did guide me to an in-development website [...] which gives a product a "green" rating from the cradle to the grave. Getting a good rating on this site is akin to getting the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" for older greenies like me. Also introduced me to a new career path for young people--industrial ecologist. In the author's words "Industrial ecology exists at the cusp where chemistry, physics and engineering meet ecology." Maybe there's hope for this planet if the Goleman's of the world impart a conscience to the production of the stuff we use. outstanding lituature if more reople would read this book, our species might last a little longer than it's going to. much insight to the long term effects of producing products, some the same way we've been doing for 100 years. technology can vastly improve the methods we use to produce consumables. Very highly reccomened. not a strong book ive read every other Goleman book and after finishing each, I was enlightened by his knowledge and writing process that informed me and made me feel like 'AHH!--I just learned something' This book does nothing of the sort and feels like a collections of essays taken form the web. I think this was not a subject matter this author should have tackled. I cannot recommend this. Good ideas but short on details This book is a good introduction to the subject, but anyone that has a basic understanding of marketing and the issues society faces with climate change, will be disappointed. The book lacks facts and figures and presents it's points more in generalities. Ecological Intelligence The first half of this book was excellent with important info and sources, but the last half petered out as if the publisher had said, "We need to make this book longer." | |
